Description of Organization
In early 2017, Minds, Inc received a $15,000 grant to continue supporting mindfulness programming for students, faculty and parents at Eastern High School. Minds was founded in 2013 to introduce pre-K through 12th grade students, educators, and parents across the DC metro area to mindfulness-based contemplative and other holistic health practices that improve mental and physical health, facilitate social and emotional learning and contribute to better behavioral and academic outcomes. The objective is to nurture healthy and safe schools by teaching self-awareness to reduce stress, improve relational skills, and build cultural competency in the community.
The collaboration grant between Minds, Inc and Insight Meditation Community of Washington in 2015 enabled Minds to begin serving Eastern HS students, faculty and parents with culturally competent mindfulness programming, enabling the creation of an entirely new curriculum specific to the needs of the Eastern HS student population. They were able to build a network of highly qualified trainers who have significant experience working with urban youth of color.
